“I observed health protocols”–Roque

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque insisted that he had nothing to do with the event in Cebu, which he attended and delivered a speech in front of a large crowd.

In a statement, Roque said he observed health protocols during the event. “As a precautionary measure, I observed physical distancing and reminded those who were present to observe the minimum health standards. Also, I did not shake hands and I wore a face mask,” he said.

He also urged the crowd to wear their masks. Roque said he, too, was surprised by the huge crowd that came to Cebu on Friday, November 27 to attend the opening of the Bantayan Island Airport.

He went on to claim that the public was also advised by the organizers to wear face masks, adding that there was “general compliance, as seen in the pictures that came out.”

During the event, minors were also present in the crowd but many were also seen violating minimum public health safety guidelines.

Roque was also appalled by nasty remarks because of the viral photo with him speaking in front of the crowd. The presidential spokesperson insisted, however, that he had nothing to do in organizing the event.

“The activity where I was seen speaking before a crowd was organized by the local government, which I had no control over as a guest,” Roque said.

“I was later informed that the local official/s mentioned in interviews that they did not expect the huge turnout of people as well,” he added.

“As the economy gradually reopens, let us continue to take good care of our health so we can work for our families and help the country. Tayo ay mag-ingat buhay para sa hanapbuhay,” Roque said.

As of Saturday, the Philippines had 427,797 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 388,062 recoveries and 8,333 fatalities.
