House, Senate finalize preparations for impeachment trial of VP Duterte

House Secretary General Reginald “Reggie” S. Velasco on Tuesday expressed gratitude to the Senate leadership for accommodating the House prosecution panel’s request for workspaces as both chambers prepare for the historic impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

Velasco, accompanied by House officials, visited the Senate to inspect the facilities that will support the House prosecution team and the impeachment secretariat throughout the proceedings.

The House delegation began its tour at the Senate session hall, the official venue of the impeachment trial, where Velasco expressed satisfaction with the logistical preparations.

“We’re pleased to see the Senate facilities, especially the session hall where this significant trial will take place. This is the same venue used during the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona under the Aquino administration,” Velasco told reporters during an ambush interview.

Smooth Collaboration Between House and Senate

Velasco emphasized that the House is working hand-in-hand with the Senate to ensure that all logistical requirements for the trial are addressed.

“This is our first inspection, and so far, we have no complaints. We are grateful to the Senate for their cooperation. We are united as we move forward with this important event,” he added.

The House team also visited the Sen. Arturo M. Tolentino Room, which has been provisionally designated as the working area for the House prosecution panel.

“We are here to check the rooms that will be assigned to the prosecution team and the impeachment secretariat so our group will be fully prepared once the trial begins,” Velasco said.

Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr. personally briefed Velasco on the facilities allotted for the House prosecutors and support staff.

When asked if the House would be making further requests, Velasco noted that they would first assess the available spaces before submitting any recommendations.

“At this point, we just wanted to inspect what has been provided before we make any formal requests,” Velasco explained.

Support Facilities to Aid House Prosecutors

Velasco reiterated the need for adequate support facilities to ensure the House prosecution panel can carry out its duties effectively.

“To have the proper facilities where the House prosecutors and the impeachment secretariat can operate smoothly is essential. This is our initial visit, and so far, we are satisfied with the Senate’s preparations,” Velasco said.

He added that the House will also establish a secondary work area within the House of Representatives for backroom operations to support the prosecution panel throughout the duration of the trial.

Velasco also pointed out that during the impeachment trial, the Senate President will serve as the presiding officer, with senators sitting as trial judges.

“As you can see, the session hall is already configured. This will be where the trial judges — the senators — will be seated, and the Senate President will preside over the proceedings,” he said.

With the impeachment trial drawing near, Velasco assured the public that the House prosecution team is making the necessary preparations to fulfill its constitutional mandate.
