The Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized SM City Olongapo Central for its outstanding achievements in energy efficiency and sustainability, citing the mall as a benchmark for efficient commercial building operations within SM Prime Holdings.
In a recent social media post, the DOE said the five-year-old mall, located in the heart of Olongapo City, has set a standard in energy-efficient building management through a series of innovative initiatives.
“Through measures such as a 1.32-megawatt solar photovoltaic system, EIFS insulation, ACVS enhancements, variable frequency drives, chiller setpoint adjustments, and natural daylighting, the mall achieved annual energy savings of 2,063,464 kilowatt-hours, reducing carbon emissions by 1,481.77 metric tons of carbon dioxide,” the DOE said.
The agency added that these technical upgrades are supported by energy optimization projects and digital management tools, including a Building Management System (BMS) and a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
SM City Olongapo Central also implements sustainability programs such as Earth Hour, Trash to Cash, and e-waste collection drives, the DOE noted.
In addition, the mall has installed electric vehicle charging stations and adopted genset noise reduction measures, highlighting the integration of clean mobility and environmental safeguards in commercial developments.
The DOE said the mall’s sustainability initiatives are further strengthened by SM Prime Holdings’ SPEEDD program, which aims to enhance engineering capabilities and promote best practices in energy management across its properties.
The recognition, the agency added, demonstrates how large commercial buildings can harness innovation, operational excellence, and holistic sustainability strategies to achieve meaningful environmental impact.
