The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has expressed full support for government efforts to safeguard members of the media, especially as the 2025 midterm elections draw near.
“As vital players in shaping the nation’s future, members of the media help the public make informed decisions by fact-checking, influencing public opinion, and holding politicians and candidates accountable. However, this critical role also exposes them to serious risks that may endanger their lives,” said DILG Undersecretary Rolando Puno.
Puno made the remarks on behalf of DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla during the launch and reactivation of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Media Security Vanguards held Tuesday in Quezon City. The event was led by Presidential Communications Office Secretary Jay Ruiz and Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) Executive Director Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr.
He emphasized the importance of raising public awareness on media safety protocols and strengthening the partnership between journalists and law enforcement to ensure quick, coordinated responses to threats against media practitioners.
“Through the Media Security Vanguards, we aim to empower journalists to do their work without fear of censorship, intimidation, or compromising their safety and integrity,” Puno stated.
Under the reactivated program, the PNP Public Information Office will assign dedicated personnel to coordinate closely with PTFoMS Special Agents in expediting investigations and resolving cases involving threats or violence against members of the press.
“We trust that the PNP Media Vanguards will continue to fulfill their vital role as frontline defenders of press freedom. Their presence reinforces our commitment to preventing impunity and upholding proactive security measures for media workers,” he added.
Puno also encouraged journalists to continue reporting the truth and to immediately report any threats or security concerns to the Media Security Vanguards.
