SINGAPORE— With the recent outbreaks of the highly contagious Delta variant in many countries, Singapore warned its citizens that the government may reimpose strict restrictions if the highly contagious variant will not be contained immediately.
According to the country’s Ministry of Health, the number of COVID-19 cases doubled in the past week with almost 1,200 cases by the end of September 5.
John Hopkins University said that Singapore has recorded a total of 68,901 COVID-19 infections with corresponding 55 fatalities.
Lawrence Wong, head of Singapore’s COVID-19 task force stated on Monday that it is not just the number of daily cases alarming the government but also the rate at which the virus proliferates.
Singapore attained an aggressive “COVID zero” policy during the pandemic by putting tight restrictions, shutting establishments, closing borders, and enforcing social distancing.
On June, the Singaporean government announced that they are planning to move to a normal living phase with pandemic strategies that seek to stewarding outbreaks through vaccines and monitoring hospitalization rather than stifling their citizens’ lives.
Singapore has now banned all workplace gatherings, including the prohibition on the holding of social events in order to contain the outbreak especially with the highly infectious Delta variant, said Wong.
