THE Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced plans to implement a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) of ₱58 per kilogram for imported rice, effective January 20, 2025, initially in Metro Manila.
This decision follows extensive consultations with importers, retailers, and other stakeholders to balance business sustainability with consumer and farmer welfare.
In preparation for the MSRP implementation, the DA is taking steps to make rice more affordable:
KADIWA ng Pangulo Centers: The DA has instructed Food Terminals Inc. (FTI) to sell rice through these centers and kiosks, offering:
5% broken rice (RFA5) at ₱45 per kilo
25% broken rice (RFA25) at ₱40 per kilo
100% broken rice (RFA100), also known as Sulit Rice, at ₱36 per kilo
National Food Authority (NFA) Stocks: Rice stored by the NFA for at least two months will be available for resale to local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila at ₱38 per kilo. This initiative aims to decongest NFA warehouses ahead of the upcoming harvest season.
These measures are part of the DA’s broader efforts to stabilize rice prices and ensure that Filipino consumers have access to affordable, high-quality rice. The MSRP will be reviewed monthly to consider factors such as global rice prices, with the possibility of adjustments based on market conditions.
Trade and Industry Secretary Cristina Roque has expressed support for the DA’s initiatives, stating that the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will assist in monitoring and enforcing the set prices.
These initiatives represent a critical step in ensuring equitable access to reasonably priced rice for all Filipinos.
