THE country’s police chief reminded police personnel to be extra cautious and to look after their own health and safety as they are constantly exposed to COVID-19.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Guillermo Eleazar that part of policemen’s duties is to face the danger of being infected with COVID-19.
At present, PGen. Eleazar said there are 28,625 police personnel already infected by the deadly disease, including 76 who succumbed in the fight against the disease.
The PNP chief’s reminder came after reports on the lockdown of a police station in Arevalo, Iloilo City where 13 police officers tested positive for COVID-19 and the infection of at least 22 cops in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan.
“Kaya patuloy tayong nakikiusap sa ating mga kababayan na gawing normal na ang pagsunod sa minimum public healthy safety protocol lalo na yung mga wala pang bakuna. Huwag na nating paabutin sa mahabang usapan at arestuhan ang mga bagay na patungkol sa inyong kaligtasan laban sa COVID-19,” said PGen Eleazar.
“On the part of the PNP, our support system for our frontliners remain firm, from their protective gears to medical attention if in case they get infected,” he added.
PGen Eleazar renewed his call for PNP personnel to get vaccinated against COVID-19, especially that a new variant, the Lambda variant, was discovered by experts in Peru. So far, the variant has not been detected in the Philippines.
“I encourage our PNP personnel to get vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect your families. Wherever there is an available vaccine, register and get a slot for this, and just make sure you go through the correct process for registration,” said Eleazar.
“Bagama’t tuloy ang pagbibigay ng bakuna sa PNP, depende ito sa dating ng suplay na allocated para sa atin kaya’t kung may offer ang mga LGU ay puwede na kayong magpabakuna sa kanila,” he added.
Further, he instructed police commanders to ensure cleanliness in police stations to avoid transmission of the virus. Aside from complying with the PNP’s Intensified Cleanliness Policy (ICP), he said one of way of protection against the deadly virus is frequent disinfection.
PGen. Eleazar vowed that the PNP leadership will extend all assistance to personnel infected with COVID-19 to help in their recovery.
