COLUMNIST and broadcaster Ramon Tulfo spent the night at the Manila Police District-Special Mayor’s Reaction Team (MPD-Smart) at the Manila City Hall.

This was after he was arrested yesterday by the police because of a warrant issued by a Manila Regional Trial Court in relation to a complaint of cyber libel filed against him.

According to MPD Chief Police Brig. Gen. Leo Francisco, Tulfo needed to explain to the court why he is unable to attend court hearings in relation to his case.

Francisco clarified, however, that Tulfo need not post bail since it was only a “bench warrant” that was issued against him because of his failure to attend court hearings. He just needed to appear in court.

The case of cyber libel against Tulfo was filed by former Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre.

This is due to articles written by Tulfo in newspapers and online news sites linking Aguirre to the controversial “Pastillas Scheme” wherein personnel of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) were also allegedly involved.

In an interview with Atty. Lean Cruz, Aguirre’s counsel, there was a hearing today at 1:30 pm where the Manila RTC Branch 24 directed MPD-Smart to bring Tulfo to the hearing.
