RENOWNED human-rights lawyer Atty. Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno has finally confirmed Wednesday that he will run for a Senate seat in the upcoming 2022 national and local elections.
In a televised interview, Diokno put an end to the questions lately thrown at him regarding his final decision for his political plans.
“Yes, I have decided that I will be running for the Senate,” the human rights advocate stated.
“Sa ngayon po ako ay isang independent. I have not joined or allied or affiliated with any particular political party,” he added.
Diokno, who is also the chairman of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG), the oldest association of human-rights lawyers in the country, pointed out that justice and economic inequalities, and even the impunity of officials who breach health policies against COVID-19, have been observed in the country, which prompted him to run again for a Senate seat.
“Napakaraming bagay ang hindi patas dito sa atin—sa batas, sa ekonomiya, sa mga patakaran sa COVID. Gawin nating mas makatarungan ang buhay ng mga Pilipino,” Diokno wrote in a tweet.
The lawyer first ran for the Senate last 2019 but much to his dismay, he only ranked 21st.
As part of the opposition and Liberal Party at that time, Diokno further expressed that he is ready to extend his utmost support should 1Sambayan join forces and integrate as one slate.
“I support fully the initiative of 1Sambayan to come up with a unity slate. I do hope that that will happen because, sa tingin ko, lalaki talaga ang tiyansa ng opposition ‘pag magsama-sama lahat and we can all unite behind a common slate,” he said.
The 1Sambayan coalition has earlier nominated Diokno as one of their standard-bearers who—as they claimed—is the most viable to win the presidential post.
