Manila Mayor Isko Moreno is appealing to all Manilenos and public alike to avoid holding parades or processions in the city while there is no final decision regarding the traditional Traslacion in January 2021.
According to Moreno, it is as difficult to prevent people from taking part in parades or processions that they are used to.
The mayor, on the other hand, fears that if there are processions, the people will only be harmed because of the possibility that it will lead to the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Moreno also clarified that the church leaders agree with his call especially and it is for the welfare and safety of the people.
It will be recalled that last month there was a procession for the Black Nazarene in Quiapo but there were criticisms for allegedly violating health protocols specifically the ban on mass gatherings and the alleged lack of social distancing.
Meanwhile, Moreno confirmed that there will be a talks between the local government and some leaders of the Church of Quiapo on Thursday to discuss the planning for Traslacion 2021.
But Moreno said based on their initial talks last week, the procession for the Black Nazarene is “it’s a no-no” situation if there is still a threat of COVID-19 or the number of cases is still high.
He said if the COVID-19 cases are low and can be controlled, the occasion may continue but there should be a new approach to be taken to ensure the safety and health of the public.
