As the Philippines moves into the cusp of 5G technology, many Filipino companies believe that the technology’s most critical use cases will involve virtual business collaboration experiences and industrial/corporate applications.
This is followed by consumer deployments such as gaming/Esports and smart vehicles, according to a recent study commissioned by Ciena, a networking systems, services and software company.
Ciena commissioned Blackbox Research, an independent research agency based in Singapore, to conduct a survey of 400 IT and business decision makers at large enterprises with more than 250 employees.
The survey was conducted in several countries, including those in Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Japan in August 2020.
As the Philippines looks ahead to 5G in the coming years, the survey revealed that real-time data transfer and better use of data analytics with 34 percent ranked highest as expecting to have the most impact from 5G.
This is followed by enhancing digital experiences at 20 percent and creating new revenue streams pegged at 15 percent. To prepare for 5G, a high 91 percent of respondents from the Philippines believe that the availability of infrastructure is the most important factor for adoption.
The appetite to invest in 5G is high as nearly half, or about 45 percent, of Filipino decision makers are willing to spend up to 15 percent of their budget on the technology. This is higher compared to respondents in Indonesia at 40 percent but less than those in Japan with 60 percent and Singapore at 51 percent, which were also surveyed.
“5G will play an important role in driving digital transformation across the Philippines and powering applications that require the lowest latency possible,” said Anup Changaroth, Chief Technology Officer of Asia Pacific and Japan at Ciena.
“To deliver high-content 5G applications, such as video and Internet of Things, operators will require computing resources at the edge cloud, closer to the end user,” Changaroth added.
