The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) joined the Muslim community in celebrating Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, across its facilities nationwide.
Eid al-Fitr, or the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is a significant Islamic celebration symbolizing spiritual renewal, gratitude, and unity. For Muslim persons deprived of liberty (PDL), observing this sacred occasion behind bars fosters a deep connection to their faith and reinforces their journey toward rehabilitation.
Currently, BJMP houses 7,453 Muslim PDL across its jails, supported by 611 Muslim personnel who facilitate religious activities and ensure culturally sensitive jail management.
To support their spiritual needs, BJMP provided iftar—the evening meal breaking the fast—throughout Ramadan. Facilities with significant Muslim populations were equipped with mosques or designated prayer areas to accommodate daily worship and religious practices.
At Manila City Jail-Male Dormitory, 280 Muslim PDL have a dedicated mosque within the facility, allowing for daily prayers, religious studies, and spiritual gatherings that strengthen faith-based rehabilitation.
At Iligan City Jail-Male Dormitory, 98 Muslim PDL marked Eid al-Fitr with Salat al-Eid, the morning prayer, followed by a festive meal featuring fried chicken and beef rendang, generously donated to the facility.
In Marawi City Jail, 157 Muslim PDL—representing 99.37% of the facility’s population—observed Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr for the first time in their newly modernized facility, which provides improved spaces for prayer and communal religious activities.
BJMP jails ensured that throughout Ramadan, Muslim PDL could observe Salat al-Tarawih (night prayers) in designated areas. Even beyond the holy month, these spaces remain accessible for Salat al-Isha (evening prayers) and Salat al-Jumu’ah (Friday noon prayers).
BJMP remains steadfast in upholding the cultural and religious rights of PDL, fostering spiritual growth, rehabilitation, and eventual reintegration into society through inclusive programs.
