A young House of Representatives leader expressed strong disappointment on Friday over Vice President Sara Duterte’s continued refusal to comply with the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) lawful summons, even after all possible excuses to avoid doing so have been addressed.
Assistant Majority Leader and Zambales Representative Jay Khonghun criticized the Vice President’s actions, highlighting the extraordinary courtesy extended by the House of Representatives in canceling a scheduled hearing to avoid conflicts with the NBI investigation.
Despite this, Duterte has failed to appear before the agency.
“Mayaman at makapangyarihan ka ba? Puwede palang hindi magpakita sa NBI kung ganun. Bakit ang ordinaryong mamamayan kailangang sundin ang batas, pero ang mga nasa mataas na posisyon, hindi?” Khonghun questioned.
He warned that such behavior sets a dangerous precedent, sending the wrong message that high-ranking officials can act above the law while ordinary citizens are held accountable.
“Kapag ang mataas na opisyal mismo ang hindi sumusunod sa batas, nasisira ang tiwala ng mga tao sa ating mga institusyon. Ang tanong ng publiko: Kung kayo nga hindi sumusunod, paano niyo aasahang kami ay sumunod?” Khonghun added.
He stressed that public officials have a duty to serve as role models of accountability and integrity.
“Ang pagiging lingkod-bayan ay hindi pribilehiyo kundi responsibilidad. Kailangan tayong maging ehemplo ng katapatan at pananagutan. Kapag ang lider ang siyang umiiwas sa batas, sinisira nito ang dignidad ng pamahalaan,” he said.
Khonghun also challenged the Vice President to meet her legal and moral obligations, underscoring the importance of respecting the rule of law.
“Ang hindi pagsipot sa NBI ay malinaw na kawalan ng respeto sa batas. Walang sinuman ang higit sa batas, kahit pa ang Pangalawang Pangulo. Ang pagsunod sa batas ay tungkulin ng lahat, hindi lamang ng mga mamamayan kundi pati na rin ng mga lingkod-bayan,” he asserted.
He called on the Filipino people to remain vigilant in upholding the rule of law, emphasizing its role as a foundation of democracy.
“Ang batas ay para sa lahat—walang kinikilingan, walang pinoprotektahan. Kung hahayaan natin ang ganitong kawalang respeto sa batas, sinisira natin ang pundasyon ng ating demokrasya,” he stressed.
Khonghun concluded with a plea to public officials: “Ang mga nasa posisyon ay dapat maging huwaran—hindi sa pagtakas sa pananagutan, kundi sa pagpapakita ng integridad. Ipakita natin na sa Bagong Pilipinas, lahat ay pantay-pantay sa harap ng batas.”
