Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, reopened its 600 schools on Monday after the devastation virus wave and the ease in restrictions but warned everyone to be cautious as the transmissible Delta variant is still a threat.
Jakarta has dropped its cases after being the Asia’s coronavirus epicenter with more than 4 million cases and 131,000 fatalities overall, authorities said.
Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan stated that out of 10,000 schools, 610 have been reopened but with 50-percent capacity in a trial resumption last April.
Anies also mentioned that 70% of Jakarta’s 10 million population have been vaccinated while on the other hand, 91% of children aged from 12-18 and 85% of educators have been inoculated.
“Vaccinations are not mandatory for at-school learning and the COVID-19 situation is much more under control,” Anies said in a statement.
Strict health protocols must be observed such as wearing of face masks at all times and chatting in class is prohibited. Schools will only operate under a 50-percent capacity with two shifts.
According to the Indonesian Health Ministry, there were 7,427 new infections on Sunday, the lowest daily cases since June 9 and a steady decline of cases since July 15 was observed.
