Police escorts to be removed from gov’t officials, private individuals once election period starts

AN estimated 71 government officials and 107 private individuals will be stripped of their protective security personnel or security detail by the Police Security and Protection Group (PSPG) once the election period starts on January 9 next year.

This was learned from PSPG spokesperson Police Major Jackson Cases, who said that those whose security detail will be removed need to apply with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for them to be given police escort.

Cases said that based on a Comelec resolution, the protective security of a politician or private individual will be removed even if they are not running in next year’s elections. “They still need to apply for a Certificate of Authority from the Comelec for them to be provided with police escort,” Cases said.

Based on initial data from PSPG, around 300 police personnel that provide security to 178 politicians and private individuals will be recalled.

However, some high-ranking government officials will not be stripped of their protective security detail from the Philippine National Police (PNP) even during the election period, as per the Comelec resolution.

Included are the President and Vice President of the Philippines, Senate President, Speaker of the House, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Comelec Chairman and Commissioners, the Secretary of the Department of National Defense and Department of the Interior and Local Government, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff and PNP Chief.
