2 learners die during Cauayan school fun run; DepEd orders fact-finding probe

Two learners died during a fun run at Cauayan South Central School in Cauayan City, Isabela, on October 3, prompting the Department of Education (DepEd) to launch a fact-finding investigation into the incident.

DepEd expressed its condolences to the families of the learners and the school community as it moved to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

According to the Cauayan City Schools Division Office, the incident occurred within the school premises during the fun run. The division office said it is coordinating with the local government and other concerned agencies to assist those affected and is cooperating with law enforcement authorities investigating the incident.

DepEd said its fact-finding inquiry will look into the conduct of the activity, the safety measures in place, the equipment used, and the respective roles of those involved.

“Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings,” the department said.

Cauayan South Central School also expressed grief over the incident and reiterated its commitment to learners’ safety and welfare.

Authorities have yet to release further details on what caused the deaths.

Both DepEd and the Cauayan City Schools Division Office urged the public to refrain from speculation and from circulating unverified information while the investigation is ongoing.

They also appealed for respect for the privacy of the learners and their families, particularly by not sharing their names, photographs, videos, or other identifying information.

The Schools Division Office said it will take further action in accordance with DepEd policies and established procedures.
