Transfer of Kerwin Espinosa to a more secure facility sought by the NBI

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) requested the Department of Justice (DOJ) to have Rolan “Kerwin” Espinosa transferred to a more secure facility, particularly at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Bicutan, Taguig City.

In a statement, NBI OIC-Director Eric Distor said that the request was made in order to comply with the security and safety protocols of Espinosa as a witness under the Witness Protection Program while in the custody of the government and at the same time as an accused appearing at cases pending in different courts.

Once the request is approved by the Secretary of Justice, the young Espinosa will be immediately transferred to the BJMP, which has ample security facilities equipped to hold a high profile prisoner like Espinosa, according to Director Distor.

On January 13, 2022, the NBI foiled an escape attempt by Kerwin Espinosa and two other detainees through the hole of the exhaust fan at the ceiling of the NBI Detention Center. With the swift and timely action of the newly-designated Chief of the Security Management Section (NBI-SMS) and his Executive Officer, the escape of the three detainees was averted.

Security measures in the Detention Center and its surrounding premises have already been tightened with regular inspection of jail facilities,” Distor stressed, adding that an on-going review of the status of the detainees’ case is currently being conducted.

As of this date, there are 79 detainees in the NBI Detention Center facing various criminal cases.
