IT IS a sad weekend for the Philippine National Police (PNP) as three cops died in the line of duty in Antique and Naga City in Camarines Sur.

The police fatalities were identified as Police Staff Sgt. Elvin Agting who died in a police operation in Bugasong, Antique on Friday; and Police Chief Master Sgt. Romeo Padua and Police Corporal Christian del Valle who both perished while performing their duty in Naga City on Saturday.

PNP Chief, Police General Guillermo Eleazar honored the cop heroes and vowed on Sunday, October 17, to extend full assistance to the family of the three policemen.

On behalf of the men and women of the Philippine National Police, I express my deepest condolences to the family of PSSgt. Elvin Agting, PCMSgt. Romeo Padua and PCpl. Christian del Valle for their ultimate sacrifice in the performance of their duty as police public servants,” said PGen Eleazar.

This is a sad weekend for police service, for the PNP as we grieve the death of three of our brothers in uniform. We are proud of their service to the Filipino people and we salute them for their sacrifice,” he added.

PSSgt. Agting died after a shootout with 33-year old Roy Jalipa whom he and other local policemen tried to arrest for shooting to death 60-year old barangay councilor Efren Florendo in Barangay Cubay North on October 15.

Suspect Jalipa was killed during the shootout.

PCMSgt. Padua, on the other hand, was conducting regular beat patrol along Caceres Street in Barangay Dinaga in Naga City on Saturday when he was suddenly hit by a metal pipe by suspect Jericho Cano from behind.

Cano then took the service firearm of PCMSgt. Padua when he fell unconscious and subsequently shot him on the head.

After receiving the report of a shooting incident from concerned citizens along Caceres Street, PCpl. Del Valle immediately responded and went to the area but was also suddenly shot by Cano whom he crossed paths with in Barangay Tabuco.

Cano died after trading shots with the policemen during a follow-up operation in Barangay Sabang in Naga City.

This is proof of the sacrifice and grave dangers that your police face every day to enforce the law and ensure everyone’s safety,” said PGen Eleazar.

“I have already instructed the RD, PRO8 and RD, PRO5 to provide full police honors richly deserved by PSSgt. Agting, PCMSgt. Padua and PCpl. Del Valle. The whole PNP salutes their display of dedication in the service of the people,” the PNP chief added.
