Taal Volcano registers tremors, gas emissions

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded tremors at Taal Volcano and emission of gasses.

In a Phivolcs bulletin issued at 5 a.m. today, the volcano registered a total of five volcanic tremors with durations ranging from 20 to 575 minutes long and placed the volcano under Alert Level 1 or low-level unrest as of yesterday.

The volcano already emitted 4.569 tons of sulfur dioxide, and registered a pronounced upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the main crater lake.

Huge gas emissions were also seen and reached a height of 2,400 meters, going on a west-southwest, southwest direction. The Phivolcs said there was also long-term deflation noticed at the Taal Caldera, and short-term inflation along the Taal Volcano Island’s northern flanks.

Phivolcs recommends motorists not to enter the Taal Volcano Island Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ), especially the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, also for boats and aircraft flying close to the volcano.

The agency also warns the public against possible hazards such as steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, or lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.
