FORMER Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando passed away today in Quezon City.
He was 77 years old.
The ex-MMDA chief reportedly died due to injuries incurred after conducting repairs on his home’s rooftop.
He was rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City where he expired.
He gained prominence in the political scene when he was elected mayor of Marikina City in 1992 for three terms until 2001.
He was credited for transforming the city into one of the most progressive and dynamic cities in the country. His strict but visionary leadership saw the city progress from a 4th class municipality to an admired Philippine city.
In 2001, he was succeeded by his wife, Marides Fernando. In 2002, he was appointed MMDA Chairman, a post he held for seven years.
After a brief hiatus from politics, Fernando returned to the political scene when he ran as congressman of Marikina in 2016.
He also established a successful business career with BF Corporation, a company involved in construction and metal works, where his company bagged significant government projects.
He is survived by his wife, Marides, and only daughter named Tala.
