QC reports sixth mpox case; orders closure of F Club

THE Quezon City Government has confirmed a sixth case of MPOX in the city, involving a 31-year-old male resident who tested positive after experiencing symptoms on October 18.

The Quezon City Health Department’s City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (CESD) received the positive test result on October 31.

An investigation by the CESD found that the patient had visited the Fahrenheit Club (F Club) on October 5, marking the sixth time this establishment has been identified as a possible exposure site for MPOX cases in the city.

Due to ongoing public health concerns, the Business Permits and Licensing Department (BPLD) had previously issued a cease and desist order (CDO) to F Club on August 24, citing non-cooperation with contact tracing efforts and violations of Republic Act 11332, the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Concern Act.

A compliance reminder followed on September 27, reiterating the establishment’s obligation to follow local and national health regulations.

Despite the CDO, the BPLD recently received a new business application under the name “F.I.N.E Wellness Bar and Spa” at the same address as F Club, using the same facilities.

The application is currently on hold due to inspectors’ findings, revealing that F Club resumed operations under this new name even prior to the latest confirmed MPOX case.

“In the interest of public health, we are enforcing a closure order for both F Club and the F.I.N.E Wellness Bar and Spa. Changing business names does not grant permission to operate without compliance with city laws and regulations,” stated Mayor Joy Belmonte. “We will not allow more QCitizens to be placed at risk. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents remains our top priority.”

To further prevent the spread of the MPOX virus, the city will hold a forum this week for spa, wellness, and entertainment establishments.

The CESD will review the city’s MPOX protocols, while the BPLD will outline the necessary permits and documentation businesses must comply with.
