PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar lauded the successful anti-illegal drug operation in Camalig, Albay that led to the seizure of P6.8-million worth of shabu and neutralization of a notorious drug suspect.

Information reaching Camp Crame from the Police Regional Office 5 (PRO5) in Bicol headed by Police Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo stated that Antonis Tupas, identifed as a high-value target, was transacting with an undercover police operative in Barangay Quiringay when he sensed the police operation.

The suspect drew his firearm and engaged PRO5 policemen in a shootout. Tupas was wounded and died while he was being rushed by policemen to a medical facility for treatment. Police operatives recovered over 1 kilogram of shabu or methamphetamine hydrochloride in the operation.

PRO5 reports indicated that Tupas obtained his supply of illegal drugs from one “Malik,” who is presently detained at the New Bilibid Prisons.

I commend the PRO5 personnel for this successful operation. This shows the PNP remains relentless in our campaign against illegal drugs and we will not stop until all notorious drug personalities are caught,” PGen. Eleazar said.

He likewise assured that the PNP is investigating how persons deprived of liberty or PDLs are still able to make illegal drug transactions while behind bars.

We have a continuing coordination with other agencies, such as BuCor and BJMP, to put a stop to PDLs making further illegal transactions, particularly drugs, while in jail or prison. Inaalam po natin kung paanong kahit nakakulong ay patuloy pa din sila nakagagawa ng iligal,” he said.

The PNP Chief added that they will also look into the possibility that they have accomplices among jail or prison personnel that’s why they are able to continue their illegal transactions.

He said they will also coordinate with BuCor Director General Gerald Bantag to verify the information and discuss further measures to put a halt to the illegal activity.
