Philippines’ COVID-19 cases now more than 173,000

The number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines soared to 173,774 after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 4,650 new infections today.

Of the 4,650 reported cases, 83 percent or 3,848 occurred within the recent 14 days (from August 6 to 19, 2020).

The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were National Capital Region with 2,576 or 67%, Region 4A with 574 or 15% and Region 6 with 156 or 4%.

DOH also announced 716 recoveries which brings the total number to 113,481.

Of the 111 deaths, 76 (68%) were recorded in August, 13 (12%) in July, 8 (7%) in June, 9 (8%) in May, and 5 (5%) in April. Deaths were from NCR (52 or 47%), Region 7 (29 or 26%), Region 4A (11 or 10%), Region 3 (6 or 5%), Region 9 (4 or 4%), Repatriate (4 or 4%), Region 6 (2 or 2%), Region 5 (1 or 1%), Region 11 (1 or 1%), and BARMM (1 or 1%.)

The health department also noted that there were eighty-nine (89) duplicates that were removed from the total case count.
