Zambales, Philippines – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported the sighting of a Chinese Coast Guard vessel 54 nautical miles off the coast of Capones Island, Zambales on January 4, 2025.
The area falls within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), prompting immediate action from local authorities.
According to a PCG statement, the Chinese vessel’s presence was detected during routine maritime patrols.
The PCG promptly issued a challenge to the foreign vessel, asserting Philippine sovereignty over the waters and condemning the incursion as a violation of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
“This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to safeguarding our maritime territory and protecting the rights of Filipino fishers,” the PCG said.
The incident comes amid ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), where disputes over territorial waters and resources have frequently placed the Philippines and China at odds.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has yet to issue a formal statement, but analysts expect the government to lodge a diplomatic protest. This latest incursion highlights the need for continued vigilance in defending the country’s maritime borders.
