Pagasa predicts only one tropical cyclone in February, Monsoon winds to dominate weather patterns

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) announced on Tuesday that only one tropical cyclone is expected to form or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this February.

However, Pagasa Administrator Nathaniel Servando noted that there’s still a chance this cyclone may not develop at all, depending on prevailing weather conditions.

In a 5 a.m. weather briefing, Pagasa weather specialist Robert Badrina reported that no low-pressure areas (LPAs) have been detected within or near PAR as of now, and none are expected at least until the weekend.

Currently, the northeast monsoon, locally known as “amihan,” is the dominant weather system affecting Northern and Central Luzon, including parts of Southwestern Luzon and Metro Manila. Pagasa explained that amihan is characterized by cold, dry winds from the northeast, often bringing cooler temperatures and fair weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the easterlies—warm, humid winds blowing from the Pacific Ocean—are causing cloudy skies, scattered rain showers, and thunderstorms over parts of Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Davao de Oro.

Pagasa added that the rest of the country will also experience the effects of these weather systems, with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms expected in various areas over the next 24 hours.

The public is advised to stay updated on the latest weather advisories and prepare for sudden changes in weather conditions, especially in areas prone to localized thunderstorms.
