The Manila Police District (MPD) is investigating the death of a male detainee who is said to have symptoms of coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
Police Captain Henry Navarro, the OIC spokesman of the MPD, confirmed the case of a 45-year-old detainee that he was indeed died inside a police precinct.
Navarro said based on the initial investigation, the person had difficulties in breathing while he was in the male custodial facility of the Sta. Cruz Police station 3, that happened yesterday, Wednesday, November 4.
Personnel of the said station conducted first aid treatment to the detainee until they decided to rush him to a nearby hospital in Tondo.
But physicians declared him dead on arrival at 7:15 p.m.
Navarro stressed the MPD is still waiting for the results of the autopsy to find out whether it is COVID-19 or some other reasons that may cause his death.
The detainee was charged with various offenses such as violating the Comprehensive Law on Firearm and Ammunition, New Anti-Carnapping Law and Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority and was arrested only last October 24, 2020.
