Movie Review: Yellow Rose now on Netflix

There is a 2019 US film about a young Filipina dreamer that just entered Netflix Philippines most watched movie this week. Here are the Top 10 reasons why you should watch Yellow Rose starring Eva Noblezada as Rose Garcia:

  1. Lots of catchy original songs, mostly country music since the movie is set in Austin, Texas. Turn on the English caption and sing along with them.
  2. You want to see Lea Salonga act in a movie again? Well, the Pinay Broadway legend has plenty of screen time here and it is definitely a treat to her fans. And yes, she sang one Tagalog classic. Goosebumps.
  3. Did you miss Princess Punzalan? If you are not a 40 something Tito or Tita, better Google her name. She’s one of the main characters here. Go tell Willie Revillame.
  4. New York Times praised director, co-writer and co-producer Dianne Paragas describing her ability, “…spins a story that is both politically timely and personal…the music has the greatest staying power…”
  5. The film won at least thirteen (13) international awards.
  6. You’ll see some familiar places in Manila in the latter part of the film. Of course, you’ll feel some sort of Pinoy pride to it. Imagine, a pedicab/ kuliglig got a 5-second spotlight in Hollywood.
  7. This musical drama is a mom and daughter story. If you have low tolerance on motherhood-related movies, better prepare some tissues.
  8. You’ll hear a lot of mentions of “Tatay” in the film so daddies should not be jealous, okay.
  9. This movie touches political issues during the Trump presidency specifically the issue on deportation of “illegal” immigrants, You’ll have a glimpse of the pain of parents being forcedly separated from their kids.
  10. This is story of every Filipino who dreams of having a better life on spite of all the difficulties we faced every day. This is our story.
