KALIBO, Aklan – Juan P. Dayang, 89, chairman emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI) and a towering figure in Philippine journalism, was shot dead at his residence, Casa Dayang in Villa Salvacion, around 8:00 PM on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
Dayang was reportedly watching television when an unidentified gunman wearing a bonnet fired three shots from outside the house. He sustained a fatal wound to the neck and two gunshots to the back. He was rushed to Dr. Rafael S. Tumbocon Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival at 8:33 PM.
A pillar in the Philippine media industry, Dayang served as PAPI president for over two decades and played a vital role in strengthening provincial journalism. He also held prominent positions, including president of the Manila Overseas Press Club, director of the National Press Club, founding president of the Federation of Provincial Press Clubs, and Secretary of the Catholic Mass Media Awards at the time of his death.
His career also extended to public service, having served as mayor of Kalibo during the administration of President Corazon Aquino.
According to Marjorie Yap, his caretaker, two unidentified men on a motorcycle were seen near the house around 9:00 AM on the same day, suggesting the attack may have been premeditated. Police are now reviewing CCTV footage and pursuing leads to identify the suspects, who fled the scene on a motorcycle. The motive behind the killing remains unknown.
Dayang’s death marks a profound loss for the Philippine media and public service sectors. His leadership, unwavering commitment to journalism, and legacy of service are mourned nationwide.
In a phone interview, PAPI President Nelson S. Santos said:
“We strongly condemn this killing, and we are calling for justice. HINDI niya deserved ang cruel and senseless end.”
Santos urged the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PFTOMS) and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough and immediate investigation, apprehend the assailants, and bring those behind the murder to justice.
“We join the entire media community in demanding justice for our Chairman Emeritus and his family. We also extend our deepest condolences to his loved ones,” Santos added.
