PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the measure that will compensate the victims of the Marawi City siege in 2017.

Under Republic Act 11696, Marawi City residents who lost their homes and other properties destroyed during the siege mounted by the Maute Terror Group will now be compensated.

According to Acting Presidential Spokesperson Secretary Martin Andanar, an independent and quasi-judicial body will be formed under the new law that will be called the Marawi Compensation Board, which will be led by a chairman and eight members that will be designated by the president.

The law also seeks to provide compensation to those who lost their loved ones who were victims of the acts of violence commited by terrorists in the city.

The Marawi Compensation Board will also identify the amount that each victim will receive depending on the damage to their property or family.
