It’s not yet the right time to expand the number coding scheme — MMDA

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said they cannot consider yet the expansion of the number-coding scheme at this time, particularly along EDSA.

During the Laging Handa public briefing, MMDA Director Neyomi Recio said that the volume of vehicles in Metro Manila is still manageable and has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels in terms of the volume, which is at 400,000 vehicles per day.

Aside from the number of vehicles, declaring that heavy traffic is being experienced in the National Capital Region (NCR) is also based on the time and speed of travel.

Recio even pointed out that based on MMDA’s monitoring, the number of vehicles traveling in the NCR even went down after petroleum products experienced a price increase and many motorists decided not to go out and use their vehicles.

From the former 396,000 per day, vehicular volume went down to only 377,000 last night.

However, Recio said the MMDA will still prepare for the onset of the new normal and the possible heaviness of vehicular traffic.
