As Perpetual Help Medical Center–Las Piñas (PHMC-LP) marks its 50th anniversary, the institution is highlighting five decades of growth from a small community clinic into a tertiary medical center serving patients across southern Metro Manila.
The anniversary comes alongside a major recognition for its founder and chief executive, Dr./BGen. Antonio Laperal Tamayo, who was recently named a recipient of the Hospital CEO of the Year – Excellence Award by Hospital Management Asia (HMA).
For PHMC-LP, however, the recognition is also a reflection of the institution’s broader evolution, particularly its investments in specialized medical services, advanced technologies, quality systems and emergency preparedness.
Founded in 1976 as a 50-bed community hospital, PHMC-LP has expanded its capabilities to provide specialized services in areas including cardiovascular medicine, oncology, kidney transplantation, neuroscience and minimally invasive surgery.
The medical center has continued to invest in technology as part of its effort to expand its diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
This year, PHMC-LP introduced the Symbia Pro.Specta Advanced Molecular Imaging System, which enables physicians to assess physiological disease functions and supports more precise cancer diagnosis and treatment monitoring.
The hospital also added the da Vinci Xi Fourth-generation Surgical System, a robotic-assisted platform designed to support minimally invasive procedures by providing surgeons with enhanced dexterity, range of motion and precision.
The medical center said additional medical technologies are expected to be introduced later this year as it continues to broaden its diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Beyond equipment and clinical capabilities, PHMC-LP has also pursued international standards for hospital operations, becoming the first hospital in the Philippines to secure a Quadruple ISO-Certified Integrated Management System.
Its certifications cover environmental management under ISO 14001:2025, healthcare quality management under ISO 7101:2023, energy management under ISO 50001:2018, and occupational health and safety under ISO 45001:2018.
The hospital has likewise taken on a role in national preparedness. It is the country’s first Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Affiliated Reserve Medical Center and the first Air Reserve Hospital, strengthening its capacity to support healthcare operations during emergencies and national crises.
Tamayo said the hospital’s latest recognition should be viewed as the result of the collective work of its medical professionals and support personnel over the past five decades.
“This recognition reflects 50 years of dedication and collective effort from our medical staff and support teams,” Tamayo said.
He said the institution’s long-term goal has been to build not simply a hospital, but a sustainable healthcare ecosystem capable of adapting to advances in medicine and the changing needs of the communities it serves.
The HMA recognition comes as the hospital enters its sixth decade with an emphasis on combining advanced medical technology with standardized systems and expanded clinical services.
Launched in 2002 alongside the annual Hospital Management Asia conference, the HMA Awards recognize healthcare organizations and leaders for initiatives and practices in hospital management, innovation and patient care across the region.
For PHMC-LP, the 50th anniversary provides an opportunity to look beyond the institution’s beginnings and toward its continuing transformation.
