A TOTAL of 567 individuals have already been arrested by the Philippine National Police (PNP) for violation of the gun ban in connection with the May 9, 2022 national and local elections.
This after an additional 21 individuals were caught violating the ban. Recovered from them were 21 guns, 71 bullets and nine deadly weapons.
Based on PNP data, those arrested were from Quezon City, Manila, Davao City, Bataan, Cagayan, Muntinlupa City, Navotas City, Las Piñas City, Pasig City, Masbate, Laguna, Cebu, San Juan City, Caloocan City, Valenzuela City, and Pasay City.
Last Tuesday, a total of 3,825 checkpoints around the country were put up by the PNP.
Under Resolution No. 10728, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) prohibits the possession of guns and other deadly weapons outside of residence and in all public places until June 8, 2022.
Exempted from the gun ban are law enforcers who should have a permit to carry issued by the Comelec, and should be in proper uniform while on official duty during the election period.
The PNP continues to remind the public that gun ban violators face a penalty of one up to six years’ imprisonment with no probation recommended.
Violators may also be disqualified from holding any government position, will not be allowed to vote, and perpetual disqualification from obtaining any gun license.
