DOH-FDA issues advisory on the use of Ivermectin

The Department of Health (DOH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today strongly advised the public against the use of Ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

In an advisory, the public was “strongly advised” by the two agencies against the purchase and use of Ivermectin veterinary products for the treatment of COVID-19.

At present, Ivermectin veterinary products are only approved for use in the prevention of heartworm disease and treatment of internal and external parasites in certain animal species.

According to the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) website, https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov, “ivermectin is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of any viral infection.”

As of today, the Philippine FDA has not received any application for the use of Ivermectin for COVID-19 treatment under the Compassionate Special Permit.
