DA allots P94.6-M to increase onion production

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said it will allot an additional P94.6 million to ramp up onion production in the country under its High-Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP).

The amount will be used to procure planting materials of red and yellow onion varieties, as well as organic and inorganic fertilizers, which will then be distributed to major onion-growing provinces.

The initiative was the result of a consultation between DA Secretary William Dar and onion farmer-leaders from Nueva Ecija and Mindoro.

In the consultation, the farmer-leaders expressed their concern on certain major issues, one of which is the decreasing prices of local onions due to the continued influx of imported ones, which are sold cheaper. Farmgate price of onions dipped by P6 per kilo in 2021.
