WHEN the country was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic starting in March 2020, one of the biggest problems was that of mobility for Filipinos since public transportation was ground to a halt so as not to spread the disease.
And that spawned interest on bike riding for many of Metro Manilans–it was affordable, promotes health and well being and most of all, safe from contracting the virus.
Aside from these concerns, rider safety was also given attention so major insurer Allianz PNB Life thought of a campaign called Ride Safe to promote safe bike riding.
Allianz launched Ride Safe in 2020 to help address Metro Manila’s transportation problems worsened by strict health protocols and lockdowns, thus catering to the metro’s growing number of cyclists.
The campaign was well received by cycling enthusiasts and just recently, Allianz Ride Safe, a bike safety and education campaign by Allianz PNB Life, was recently recognized as one of the country’s best corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives at the Asia CEO Awards 2021 last October 12.
Allianz Life President and CEO Alexander Grenz, in acknowledging the company’s Center of Excellence recognition, said, “It is an honor for Allianz to be recognized by such a distinguished award-giving body. Together with all the nominees, we will continue to help more Filipinos during the pandemic.”
This year, Allianz clinched a finalist spot in the category and entry to the Circle of Excellence with its Ride Safe campaign. The grand prize was awarded to Magsaysay Shipping & Logistics (MSL) for its wide-scale pandemic relief efforts.
The top CSR award was opened to corporate and non-corporate organizations committed to promoting environmental protection and awareness, livelihood programs, and youth development projects over the past year.
The Asia CEO Awards is the largest business awards event in the Philippines. With the purpose of promoting the country as the premier business destination for global enterprises, it presents a wide range of highly competitive awards, including CSR Company of the Year.
Besides aligning with the insurer’s global sustainability goals, the campaign also collaborated with policymakers and citizen advocates alike. Its landmark initiatives so far include the country’s first solar-powered bike pit stop in San Juan City and themed bike racks and art installations in three of Manila’s main parks.
“Providing safer and alternative transportation is one of the best ways Allianz PNB Life can ensure healthier cities and people. Recognitions like this are what can give Ride Safe the on-ground support it needs to further succeed,” said Grenz.
Allianz is now in talks with more local officials to bring Ride Safe to other parts of the country.
