Tricycle driver runs over police officer at Zambales checkpoint, faces criminal charges

SUBIC, Zambales – A police officer was injured after being deliberately run over by a tricycle driver who attempted to evade a joint COMELEC checkpoint operation in Brgy. Nagbunga, San Marcelino, Zambales, on February 9, 2025, at approximately 3:05 PM.

The injured officer, identified as PCpl. John Nelson Flores, 36, a dedicated member of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and resident of Brgy. Pamatawan, Subic, Zambales, sustained injuries to his right leg after being intentionally struck by the suspect’s motorcycle. The suspect, known only as “Bert,” 25, a resident of Brgy. Cawag, Subic, Zambales, was driving a black Honda TMX 155 (UF 4677) when he was flagged down for inspection. Instead of complying, he accelerated toward PCpl. Flores, ramming into him before attempting to flee.

PBGEN Jean S. Fajardo, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 3 (PRO3), strongly condemned the attack and reaffirmed the PNP’s commitment to securing the electoral process.

“This reckless assault on one of our officers is an attack on the very peace and order we are sworn to protect. Our police personnel put their lives on the line daily to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of our communities—especially during this crucial election period. Let this be clear: any act of violence against our officers will be met with swift justice. We will exhaust all legal means to hold the perpetrator accountable. I call on the public to respect and support our men and women in uniform as we work together for a secure and orderly election.”

The suspect has been taken into custody and now faces charges of frustrated homicide and disobedience to lawful orders.

The PNP urges the public to fully cooperate with law enforcement officers during checkpoint operations, emphasizing that these security measures are essential in preventing crime and ensuring the integrity of the upcoming elections. Authorities warn that any attempt to defy or harm law enforcers will be met with the full force of the law.
