HOUSE Assistant Majority Leader Jay Khonghun of Zambales called on Filipino voters on Monday to reject candidates perceived to support China’s interests in the upcoming May elections, warning against the dangers of compromising national sovereignty amid China’s illegal incursions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Khonghun, who also chairs the House Special Committee on Bases Conversion, cited recent surveys showing a growing distrust among Filipinos towards China. A Pulse Asia survey commissioned by the Stratbase ADR Institute revealed that 73% of Filipinos would not support candidates aligned with pro-China sentiments, while a separate OCTA Research survey from March 2024 found that 76% of Filipinos consider China the country’s “greatest threat.”
“These surveys send a clear message from our people—they will not accept candidates who side with China. This May election is an opportunity to show that we will never sell out our sovereignty,” Khonghun stressed.
He emphasized the importance of electing leaders who will stand firm against China’s continued harassment of Filipino fisherfolk and its unlawful activities in the WPS.
“The upcoming elections are not just about choosing local and national leaders. This is a matter of national security. We must choose leaders who will defend our territorial rights, not those who will bow down to China’s influence,” he added.
Khonghun underscored the need for a united stand against foreign aggression, urging voters to scrutinize candidates thoroughly, especially those with questionable ties to China. He warned that electing pro-China leaders could endanger the country’s economic and security interests.
“Our vote is our weapon against candidates who are complicit with China’s agenda. Let’s not allow them to jeopardize our nation’s future,” he said.
The lawmaker also raised concerns about disinformation campaigns designed to mislead voters into supporting pro-China candidates.
“The Chinese propaganda machinery is active, influencing narratives and promoting their chosen candidates. We must remain vigilant and well-informed,” Khonghun cautioned.
He called on Filipinos to reject external interference and stand together in defending the nation’s sovereignty.
“This is the time for us to show unity as a nation,” he declared.
Khonghun reaffirmed his commitment to pushing for policies that strengthen the country’s defense capabilities and support local industries affected by China’s economic maneuvers. He also urged fellow lawmakers to adopt a more assertive stance in safeguarding national interests.
“We will not allow China’s creeping influence to dictate our future. The Filipino people deserve leaders who will fight for their welfare, not those who will sell out their principles,” Khonghun concluded.
