Quezon City Government expands “Car-Free, Carefree Sundays” along Tomas Morato Avenue

THE Quezon City Government is set to continue its monthly “Car-Free, Carefree Sundays” along Tomas Morato Avenue, a program designed to promote active mobility and provide a safe, open space for residents and visitors to enjoy recreational activities.

Based on Ordinance No. SP-3345, S-2024, a portion of Tomas Morato Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic, giving way to pedestrians, joggers, and cyclists. This initiative aims to encourage a healthy lifestyle, reduce vehicular emissions, and contribute to a cleaner, greener city.

The road closure spans Tomas Morato Avenue from Timog Avenue to Don Alejandro Roces Avenue. Traffic rerouting will be implemented, and motorists are advised to check the official Quezon City Government Facebook page for updates on the new traffic scheme.

The program will roll out in two phases:

Phase 1: Starting immediately, the car-free scheme will be implemented every first Sunday of the month from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

Phase 2: After a year, the schedule will expand to every other Sunday of the month.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte highlighted the initiative’s goals: “Car-Free Sundays reflect our vision of a sustainable, people-first Quezon City. We want to encourage outdoor activities, promote healthy living, and support our commitment to environmental sustainability.”

The initiative underscores Quezon City’s dedication to creating vibrant urban spaces and promoting environmental and public health.
