WASHINGTON — DEMOCRATIC Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican former president Donald Trump are locked in a tense race for the White House as polls gradually close across the United States on Tuesday night, with Americans bracing for a long wait for final results.
Early projections by U.S. media outlets show Trump leading with victories in 20 states, including major wins in Texas and Ohio, along with other traditionally Republican-leaning states.
Harris has secured wins in eight states so far—Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont—as well as the District of Columbia.
Currently, Trump holds 201 electoral votes while Harris has 91. To claim the presidency, a candidate must reach the critical threshold of 270 electoral votes.
Observers anticipate that the closely contested election will ultimately be decided by a few key battleground states, where vote counts are expected to be especially close.
