Over 17,000 PCG Personnel Deployed, Ramps Up Vessel Inspections for Undas 2026

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is stepping up vessel inspections and deploying 17,000 personnel nationwide as up to two million passengers are expected to travel by sea during the Undas 2026 observance.

The heightened safety measures will cover the anticipated surge in maritime passengers from October 29 to November 3, with authorities targeting zero maritime incidents throughout the holiday period.

PCG Spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said Coast Guard personnel have been directed to conduct stricter pre-departure inspections, particularly on roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) and passenger vessels.

Inspections will focus on proper cargo placement and securing arrangements to prevent obstructions to emergency exits. Personnel will also examine firefighting equipment, lifesaving devices, passenger manifests, and compliance with authorized passenger and cargo capacities.

“Our personnel conduct concentrated inspection, particularly on the firefighting plan and equipment, as part of the PCG’s comprehensive pre-departure inspection procedures,” Cayabyab said.

The PCG is coordinating with vessel masters and shipping companies to ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations, particularly those covering cargo stowage and fire prevention.

Cayabyab stressed that shipowners and vessel operators must take responsibility for maintaining safe conditions aboard their vessels.

“Maritime safety is a shared responsibility, and we are calling on all shipowners to strictly observe maritime safety regulations, specifically on cargo stowage and fire prevention,” she added.

The Coast Guard is also strengthening coordination with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), and other maritime stakeholders to address potential safety risks and manage the expected increase in passenger traffic.

“Our objective for Undas 2026 is to record zero maritime incidents,” Cayabyab stressed, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and interagency cooperation in ensuring safe sea travel.

Meanwhile, passengers are reminded not to bring prohibited materials aboard vessels and to remain vigilant against suspicious baggage or individuals.

Travelers may report security concerns through the PCG e-SUMBONG QR code available at passenger terminals and aboard vessels for immediate action.
