THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said it plans to finish by the end of March its investigations on the alleged security breach of the servers of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and also involving Smartmatic, its software provider.
During the hearing of the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, the NBI was asked if they can finish their probe by March 31 since it promised to come out with a final result.
NBI Cybersecurity Division chief Vic Lorenzo said they are preparing the final report and only need to do one more stage before they wrap up their investigation.
But the committee insisted that the NBI’s investigation should not take too long anymore since the elections are quite near.
Lorenzo again noted that based on their initial probe, there were no sensitive information that came out, compared to the previous “Comeleak” incident back in 2016.
However, Lorenzo said they are convinced that the former Smartmatic employee involved in the breach may possible face charges of illegal access and obstruction of justice.
The Senate earlier said the former Smartmatic employee is already in the custody of the NBI.
On the side of the Comelec, Commissioner George Garcia mentioned that they will just wait for the NBI’s report and any action by the poll body will be based on the report’s content.
In an en banc meeting last Wednesday, Garcia said they will include in their agenda all the information that came out from the Senate’s executive session, and items discussed during the House committee hearing held today.
