Marcos declares January 9 as Special Non-Working Day in Manila for Feast of Black Nazarene

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared January 9, 2025 (Thursday), a special non-working day in the City of Manila to mark the Feast of the Black Nazarene, a religious celebration expected to draw millions of devotees.

The announcement was made through Proclamation No. 766, signed on Friday, which emphasized the significance of the event. “The Feast of the Black Nazarene will be celebrated on January 9, 2025, Thursday… Millions of devotees are expected to flock to Quiapo Church and the City of Manila,” the proclamation stated.

The proclamation was issued to ensure an orderly observance of the feast, facilitate traffic management, and support preparations for the annual procession known as the Traslacion.

Route and Security Measures:
The route for this year’s procession remains unchanged. Devotees will accompany the revered image of the Black Nazarene from the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park to the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno, commonly known as Quiapo Church, via Quezon Boulevard.

To ensure the safety and security of participants, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) will deploy over 14,000 personnel. This includes:

12,168 officers for securing the area and procession route.

2,306 personnel serving as an augmentation force.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will also assist the Philippine National Police (PNP) in securing the event.

Significance of the Feast:
The Feast of the Black Nazarene is one of the largest religious events in the Philippines, marked by fervent devotion and the annual Traslacion, where devotees attempt to touch or get close to the image, believing it brings miracles and blessings.

With the declaration of January 9 as a special non-working holiday, residents and devotees are encouraged to participate in the celebration while observing safety protocols.
