THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it has already taken action on the supposed data breach in the operations of Smartmatic, the poll body’s software provider.
However, Comelec Commissioner George Garcia said they will not be able divulge or make public the details on the measures that the poll body since the investigation being done by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is still ongoing.
“The en banc is taking action. Details cannot be revealed yet so as not to prejudice the ongoing NBI investigation,” says Garcia.
It was learned from Garcia that an official directive will be given to Comelec officials as its response to the controversy by March 29, 2022.
“Directives will be given to certain Comelec officials and we expect the directive complied until March 29, 2022,” Garcia added.
It was earlier learned that a former Smartmatic employee allowed himself to be used by a supposed group of hackers to copy election data from the former employee’s company-issued laptop.
However, Comelec Commissioner Marlon Casquejo reiterates that there is no way for hackers to manipulate the results of the May 9 national and local elections.
