A new batch of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) was released by the Bureau of Corrections (Bureau of Corrections) as part of the commemoration of the 128th Philippine Independence Day.

BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said that since the start of the Marcos administration, a total of 32,388 PDLs have been released in accordance with law, reflecting what he described as the government’s focus on fair and humane treatment of inmates.

Recently, 803 PDLs were released. Of this number, 95 were acquitted, 13 were granted probation, 176 were granted parole, 53 were released through habeas corpus, 464 completed their sentences, and two were released under other legal categories.

According to the BuCor chief, the release of these PDLs not only helps ease prison congestion but also symbolizes hope and the restoration of opportunities.

“As the nation marks its independence, documents of another 40 PDLs have been signed for their release. The freedom given to these individuals reflects the country’s core values of liberty, justice, and compassion,” Catapang said.

“Walang forever sa kulungan pero may second chances sa buhay,” Catapang added, addressing the PDLs.

It was noted that Justice Secretary Fredderick A. Vida, the guest of honor at the event, was represented by Undersecretary Deo Marco.

Also present were former Secretary and current President of the Muslim Association of the Philippines (MAPI), Almarin Tillah, Al Haj; Attorneys Ronald Macorol and Atty. Demiteer Huerta of the Public Attorney’s Office; Engr. Elmer Docusin, Supervising Labor and Employment Officer of the Department of Labor and Employment; and Mary Jane Novencido, Supervising Probation and Parole Officer of the Parole and Probation Administration.

Meanwhile, Catapang also confirmed the promotion of civilian personnel Engr. Al Cir Rañosa to Supervising Administrative Officer under the General Services Division.
