BATAAN Governor Joet Garcia has announced the declaration of the pawikan (marine turtle) as the province’s flagship species under Provincial Ordinance No. 23, series of 2024, passed by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan led by Vice Governor Cris Garcia.
The ordinance highlights the need to conserve Bataan’s rich biodiversity, particularly its marine turtles, including the olive ridley, hawksbill sea turtle, and green sea turtle.
This initiative seeks to raise awareness among residents and tourists about the importance of protecting pawikan and their habitats. It also advocates for sustainable marine practices and encourages partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, schools, and other stakeholders to implement effective conservation strategies.
“This effort underscores our commitment to safeguarding our natural resources for the benefit of tourism and the overall progress of our province,” Governor Garcia stated.
The provincial government calls for collective action to preserve Bataan’s natural heritage, ensuring sustainable development for future generations.
