Several low-lying communities in Subic, Zambales, remained free from widespread flooding despite heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon and enhanced by Typhoon Inday.
The local government attributed the improved conditions to the continuing flood-mitigation program led by Zambales First District Rep. Jay Khonghun and the Subic municipal government under Mayor Jonathan “Jon” Khonghun.
Among the areas that did not experience flooding were Barangays Sto. Tomas, San Isidro, Cawag, Naugsol, Ilwas, Asinan Proper, Aningway and Manggahan. These communities had previously been considered flood-prone during periods of intense rainfall.
Authorities said the continuous desilting and deepening of rivers in Manggahan, Ilwas, and Sacatihan significantly improved water flow. The extensive clearing of creeks, esteros, and drainage canals across several barangays also helped prevent waterways from overflowing.
The Subic local government earlier assured residents that it would continue preparing for extreme weather conditions, whether caused by La Niña or El Niño, through programs aimed at protecting lives and livelihoods from disasters.
Residents expressed gratitude for the local government’s early and sustained flood-prevention efforts, which began even before the rainy season.
They said the improvements brought considerable relief because they no longer had to evacuate or fear sudden flooding despite the intense rainfall experienced at the height of the severe weather.
