MARINA launches intensified vessel inspections in Zamboanga Region

ZAMBOANGA CITY — The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has begun intensified compliance inspections of vessels operating in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Sulu, following a directive from MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan to strengthen maritime safety in the region.

The heightened inspection activities were launched yesterday, covering ships plying routes in the Zamboanga Region and nearby areas. On the first day of operations, the MARINA Regional Office IX (MRO IX) inspected three vessels, including two roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels and one passenger vessel.

MARINA said the compliance inspections will continue until all vessels operating in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Sulu have been assessed. The initiative is being carried out in accordance with MRO IX Advisory No. 2026-003.

The agency said the intensified monitoring aims to prevent maritime incidents and ensure the strict compliance of shipping companies and vessel operators with existing regulations. Inspection teams are checking the proper stowage and securing of cargo, the availability and condition of life-saving equipment, fire protection and firefighting systems, navigational equipment, as well as the propulsion and machinery of the vessels.

MARINA warned that vessels found to have deficiencies or violations of safety standards may face suspension of operations and other penalties in accordance with prevailing rules and regulations.

The agency said it will sustain its monitoring activities to safeguard the safety of passengers, crew members, and other stakeholders in the maritime transport sector. MARINA also urged vessel operators to cooperate fully and strictly comply with all safety requirements to ensure safe sea travel in the region.
