Gov’t considers removing EDSA Bus lane, says MMDA Chief

The government is considering the possible removal of the EDSA Bus Lane, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes revealed on Wednesday.

Speaking at a Palace press briefing, Artes said the proposal was discussed during a meeting with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., where they tackled the Comprehensive Traffic Management Plan (CTMP) for Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

However, Artes clarified that the removal of the EDSA Bus Lane remains a suggestion and will not be implemented unless the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) system’s carrying capacity is significantly improved.

MRT Expansion Key to Proposal

“The Department of Transportation (DOTr) mentioned that they are currently working on increasing the MRT’s carrying capacity. If I recall correctly, they aim for an additional 30% capacity, as each train currently runs with only three coaches per trip,” Artes explained.

The EDSA Bus Lane has been a key component of Metro Manila’s public transport system, providing dedicated lanes for buses to ease congestion. The proposal to remove it comes amid efforts to enhance traffic flow and improve mass transit efficiency in the capital.
