TO reinforce its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, the Quezon City Government has introduced eight electric bus units on one of its key public transportation routes.
These electric buses now operate on Route 1 of the QCity Bus Service, covering trips between Quezon City Hall and Cubao. Each bus features a 41-seating capacity, with additional space for standing passengers to ensure safety and comfort. The units are also equipped with wheelchair ramps for persons with disabilities, handrails, fire suppression systems, emergency equipment, CCTV cameras, and smart televisions.
The deployment of these electric buses aligns with Republic Act No. 11697, also known as the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA), which mandates that at least 5% of government-owned or leased vehicles must be electric.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte emphasized the city’s dedication to sustainable practices, stating:
“The official rollout of our electric QCity buses solidifies our commitment to environmental sustainability by transitioning to reusable energy.”
This initiative is part of the city’s broader Enhanced Local Climate Change Action Plan 2021–2050, aimed at building a greener future. Last year, the city government took further steps by installing solar panels on select buildings within the city hall complex, with plans to expand these installations to public schools and hospitals.
The electric QCity Bus project demonstrates Quezon City’s leadership in adopting eco-friendly technologies to promote sustainable urban development.
