SOLDIERS of the 4th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army are mourning the death of a fellow soldier who risked his life while performing his duty for the country.
This was after the New People’s Army allegedly ambushed the victim, Staff Sgt. Darryl Jay Rivera, in Brgy. Puting Bato, Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte the other day.
According to Maj. Francisco Garello, Public Affairs Office Chief of the 4th ID, Rivera was cruising along Puting Bato Road, which is part of Sitio Lusong, together with militiaman John Odon aboard a motorcycle when they were fired upon by a still undetermined number of rebels.
Rivera died due to several bullet wounds in different parts of his body while Odon, who was slightly injured from the shooting, managed to escape,
It was learned that Rivera and Odon were on their way back to their patrol base in Lusong after a meeting with residents of Cabadbaran City regarding a livelihood project by the local government unit when the incident happened.
The military already sent their condolences to Rivera’s family and assured that justice will be served against the perpetrators.
Garello added that Staff Sgt. Rivera was among those who received meritorious promotion after an encounter that happened at Zapanta Valley in Agusan del Norte.
